The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has tasked government institutions, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, civil society actors, security operatives and citizens to make human rights the compass of everyday actions.
The Kaduna State Coordinator of the NHRC, Gwar Terngu, made the call on Wednesday at an event in Kaduna, marking International Human Rights Day, with the theme: “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials.”
Gwar explained that human rights are not privileges reserved for a few, but the everyday essentials every person needs to live with dignity, freedom and equality.
He added that this year’s theme highlights that human rights are woven into the fabric of daily life.
According to him, they include the right to safety and security in communities; the right to education and healthcare; the right to participate in governance; and the right to justice when wronged. He also stressed the right to speak, dream, believe and aspire without fear.

Gwar noted that, “These are not distant ideals; they are the foundation upon which our societies stand.”
He emphasised that in Kaduna State, the National Human Rights Commission remains steadfast in its mandate to protect, promote and enforce these rights.
He said, “We recognise the many challenges that continue to confront our people, gender-based violence, harmful cultural practices, discrimination, insecurity, obstacles to justice and violations in both digital and physical spaces.
“Yet, we are equally inspired by the resilience of our communities; the commitment of government partners, civil society organisations, the media, traditional and religious leaders; and young people championing change,” he added.

“As we mark this important day, we reiterate that human rights must guide governance, security operations, public policy and community leadership.
“When human rights flourish, peace grows; justice becomes accessible; inequality shrinks; and development becomes sustainable.
“Let us ensure that our homes are safe for women and girls; that our schools are free from discrimination; that our public institutions remain accountable; and that our digital spaces do not become arenas of abuse.
“On our part, the NHRC in Kaduna will continue to expand access to justice, strengthen human rights education, deepen collaboration across sectors and amplify the voices of the most vulnerable.
“Together, let us build a society where every person wakes up each day knowing that their rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.
“As we celebrate International Human Rights Day, let us reaffirm our shared humanity and our collective responsibility to make human rights truly the essentials of everyday life,” he maintained.
