Civil Group Urges EFCC to Scrutinize Defense Minister, Matawalle

A call to action has been sounded by the APC Akida Forum, a socio-political pressure group, urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to delve into the affairs of Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the former Governor of Zamfara State now serving as the Minister of Defense. The group’s plea, submitted formally to the EFCC headquarters on Friday, May 3rd, 2024, highlights concerns of alleged corruption and misappropriation of public funds amounting to a staggering N70 billion during Matawalle’s tenure.

Mallam Musa Mahmud, chairman of the APC Akida Forum, disclosed that previous investigations by the EFCC into Matawalle’s purported corruption were inconclusive, with accusations ranging from embezzlement to the fraudulent allocation of contracts. Mahmud emphasized the urgency for the EFCC to reignite this investigation, underscoring the nation’s commitment to combatting corruption and ensuring public officials are held accountable for their actions.

Among the allegations directed at Matawalle are claims of diverting state funds earmarked for developmental projects in Zamfara State to bolster his political ambitions. Such accusations paint a picture of misuse and exploitation of public resources for personal gain, a grave offense that cannot be overlooked.

The timing of the APC Akida Forum’s call for scrutiny coincides with the government’s intensified efforts to eradicate corruption from the country’s governance systems. It’s imperative, the group argues, for the EFCC to showcase its unwavering dedication to this cause by thoroughly investigating and, if warranted, prosecuting Matawalle.

Mahmud asserted, “We implore the EFCC to reopen its inquiry into the alleged corruption involving Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the State Minister for Defense. Testimonies from contractors, who were interrogated by the Commission, have unearthed startling revelations of coercion by the governor to refund monies received from state coffers in hard currency.”

He further emphasized, “It is paramount for the EFCC to unravel the truth behind these allegations and hold those responsible for the mismanagement of public funds accountable. This action will serve as a deterrent to others contemplating engaging in corrupt practices while in public office.”

In response to the group’s petition, Wilson Uwujaren, the Acting Director of Public Affairs at the EFCC, assured that the Commission remains steadfast in pursuing the alleged N70 billion corruption case involving Matawalle. He commended the APC Akida Forum for their peaceful demonstration, affirming the Commission’s commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law.

“I commend members of the APC Akida Forum for exercising their right to protest peacefully. It is a fundamental aspect of our democracy. Rest assured, the EFCC does not abandon investigations. Once a case is initiated, we pursue it diligently,” stated Uwujaren. “I assure you that this petition will receive the attention it deserves. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.”
