The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) has donated a state-of-the-art hostel block to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, significantly enhancing the facilities for healthcare education.

The new building will house nursing students in excellent accommodations and help the federal government achieve its lofty target of creating 120,000 nurses a year.

Prominent people attended the commissioning ceremony, including Mr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, who emphasized the hostel’s contemporary features.

Distinguished guests, including as Mr. Tunji Alausa, the State Minister for Health and Social Welfare, who highlighted the hostel’s modern amenities, attended the commissioning event.

Additionally, Mr. Alausa revealed new pledges made by OSSAP-SDGs led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “OSSAP-SDGs has pledged to construct a student hostel at Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba as well as a second hostel at Igbobi. In order to meet our target of generating 120,000 nurses yearly, these hostels are essential. Our children are our future, thus it is up to us to continue fostering and creating situations that are secure and supportive so they can develop into important members of society.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, expressed her happiness at the occasion.
“I am thrilled to be present today as we formally inaugurate this cutting-edge School of Nursing Hostel.” OSSAP-SDGs built and outfitted numerous strategic health projects throughout the nation, including this one.

“The new building has 26 rooms on one suspended floor, 2 kitchenettes, 1 store, 2 matron rooms, and 2 lounges, accommodating up to 144 students,” Princess Orelope-Adefulire said in describing the hostel’s characteristics. In order to ensure that our nursing students have a safe and comfortable place to live—a necessity for their academic and professional development—this facility meets the critical needs for accommodations.

She highlighted the advantages of the hostel, stressing how it helps with housing concerns, shortens commutes, improves academic achievement, and creates a sense of community among students. “By addressing these issues, we are contributing to the overall goal of SDG-3, ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being, as well as improving the quality of education for these students.”

The commitment of OSSAP-SDGs to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria was reiterated by Princess Orelope-Adefulire. “In order to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind, we will keep giving priority to interventions that have an impact on the lives of the poor and vulnerable.”
The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi’s new hostel is a big step in improving healthcare education and preparing Nigeria’s future nurses with the tools and drive to improve the country’s healthcare system.
