Labour Party Insists On Abure As National Chairman.

April 2025

The Labour Party, LP has said Julius Abure remains its National Chairman despite a Supreme Court ruling that sacked him from the position.

In a unanimous judgment on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to have pronounced Abure National Chairman of the LP having earlier found that the substance of the case was about the party’s leadership.

It held that issue of leadership was internal affair of a party over which courts lacked jurisdiction.

The court allowed the appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other and held that it was meritorious.

It proceeded to dismiss the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the LP got being unmeritorious

The apex court also pointed out that Abure’s tenure had already expired, just as it dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the Labour Party.

In reaction the supreme court judgement, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said the judgment favoured Abure because only political parties could determine their leaders.

“Supreme Court strikes out Nenadi, Abure suits, says only Political Parties can can determine who their leaders are.

Ifoh, further stated, “It also said that the courts shouldn’t dabble into the affairs of the political parties. Abure is still the National Chairman of the Labour Party,”
