Man Detained In Bauchi For Counterfeit Naira Notes

Tahir Ahmed, a 62-year-old man was taken into custody by Bauchi Police Command agents for counterfeit currency fabrication. In a press release on Tuesday, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, revealed.

He reported, “On August 6, 2024, while traveling to Bauchi State, a concerned individual from Jos North LGA, Plateau State, boarded a commercial Vectra vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi Toro LGA.

Tahir Ahmed, a 62 year old man, got out of the car and joined the vehicle to Bauchi when they arrived at Tilden Fulani Market in Toro Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

“Ahmed is accused of using what seemed to be ceremonial chanting to change some papers into new 1,000 naira notes while they were in transit, raising suspicions that the notes might be fake.”

He maintained that upon reaching Bauchi metropolitan around Yandoka Road, a good samaritan reported to the police station.

According to Wakil, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime during a series of interrogations, and two hundred and thirty-eight thousand naira—suggested to be counterfeit notes—were found on him.

“Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details related to this incident,” the PPRO continued. “The Deputy Commissioner of Police, who is in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, has been instructed by the Command Police Commissioner, Auwal Muhammad, to send a request letter to the Central Bank of Nigeria for forensic analysis in order to determine the authenticity of the suspected currency notes.”
