Niger State Eases Curfew on Motorcycles, Tricycles Amid Improved Security

The Niger State Government has relaxed its curfew restrictions on the operation of motorcycles and tricycles in the state capital, Minna, citing progress in local security conditions.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced that the new curfew hours will now run from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, a shift from the previous all-encompassing ban that heavily limited commercial mobility in the evening hours. The change takes immediate effect.

This decision follows recent recommendations from the state’s security committee and is intended to ease the burden on commuters and commercial transport operators who depend on motorcycles and tricycles for their daily livelihoods.

“The adjustment reflects an improved security situation in Minna,” Governor Bago said, noting that while safety remains a top priority, the government is also mindful of the economic impact prolonged restrictions have on citizens.

Niger joins a growing list of Nigerian states re-evaluating curfews and transport bans in light of changing security dynamics. Similar measures were seen in Katsina State in late 2024, where authorities extended operating hours for commercial riders after security assessments, and in Plateau State, which lifted certain restrictions in 2021.

Authorities in Niger State have urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region. Updates on curfews and public transport policies will continue to be communicated through official government channels.
