There are signs pointing to the Federal Government’s intention to reopen Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic, as per insights gathered by Vanguard Maritime Report. The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with its Benin Republic counterpart, is currently fine-tuning plans to address the underlying issues that led to the border closure.
Efforts are underway by officials from both customs administrations to establish protocols that will facilitate legitimate trade across border posts, particularly at Seme and other key crossings.
Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, emphasized that President Bola Tinubu holds the final authority on the border reopening decision. Adeniyi highlighted that Customs has conveyed the concerns and grievances of border communities to President Tinubu.
Speaking to Vanguard Maritime Report, Mr. Timi Bomodi, the Customs Area Comptroller of the Seme Border Command, expressed the Command’s eagerness for the border to reopen, stressing that they are awaiting directives from the government.
Bomodi stated, “Our readiness surpasses that of the traders. We eagerly anticipate the border’s reopening, but ultimately, it’s contingent upon the government’s decision. Whatever the governments decide, we will comply.”

Meanwhile, a Benin Customs Service official, speaking anonymously, emphasized the detrimental impact of the Seme border closure on their country’s economy. They expressed eagerness for the border’s swift reopening, citing significant revenue losses incurred during the closure period.
The official disclosed, “Your Comptroller General engaged in discussions with his Beninese counterpart regarding border reopening. We are fully prepared to accommodate the anticipated trade flow and eagerly await its resumption.”
Addressing readiness for the border reopening, Mr. Segun Oduntan, the National Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), affirmed that their members are prepared to resume operations in Seme once the government gives the green light.
