Oyo State Commits N3.5 Billion to Upgrade Rural Markets

In a bold move to strengthen its agricultural economy and improve rural infrastructure, the Oyo State Government has signed a contract worth N3.5 billion to modernize key rural markets under the first phase of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

The project targets three major markets across the state — Aare-Alasa Market in Ona-Ara Local Government, Oja-Agbe Market in Iseyin Local Government, and Oja-Oba Market in Ibarapa Central. The upgrades aim to enhance trading conditions, ease transportation of agricultural goods, and support farmers and traders in rural communities.

During the contract signing ceremony, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalizing rural economies. He stated that the initiative would transform the selected markets into modern commercial hubs with improved infrastructure, access roads, and storage facilities.

The breakdown of the contract includes N1.2 billion for Aare-Alasa Market, another N1.2 billion for Oja-Agbe Market, and just over N1 billion for Oja-Oba Market. The contracts have been awarded to Quicbond Nigeria Ltd, Lee Fakino Nigeria Ltd, and AB-Bond Habitat Ltd respectively.

Project Coordinator of OY-RAAMP, Engr. Adeola Ekundayo, explained that the initiative is part of a larger plan to ensure food security and boost the agricultural value chain across the state.
