Tinubu Congratulates New Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Hails Traditional Institution

Tinubu Congratulates New Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Hails Traditional Institution…President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Prince Clement Adesuyi Haastrup on his official installation as the 49th Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, a revered traditional title steeped in the history and cultural legacy of the Ijesa people in Osun State.

In a statement issued by the presidency, Tinubu lauded the ascension of the new monarch, describing it as a significant moment for Ijesaland and a step toward continued cultural preservation and community progress.

The President expressed his confidence in the leadership and wisdom of Oba Haastrup, noting that his decades of experience in both the public and private sectors would serve the people of Ijesaland well.

Tinubu also acknowledged the importance of traditional rulers in the country’s development, emphasizing their enduring role in promoting peace, unity, and socio-cultural advancement.

Prince Haastrup, who hails from the ruling House of Ogboni in Ilesa, emerged as the new Owa Obokun following the passing of the former monarch, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, who reigned for over four decades.

His selection and eventual installation were the result of a meticulous and inclusive traditional process, culminating in a grand coronation ceremony that drew dignitaries from all walks of life.

The coronation activities spanned ten days, beginning on May 16, 2025, with a Jumat service held at the Ilesa Central Mosque.

This was followed by a series of cultural, religious, and civic events that celebrated the rich heritage of the Ijesa people.

The final and most symbolic moment took place on May 23, when Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, formally presented the Staff of Office to the new Owa Obokun, officially ushering him into his role as the traditional head of Ijesaland.

President Tinubu, while congratulating the new monarch, called on the people of Ijesaland to lend their full support to Oba Haastrup.

He urged them to uphold the values of unity and cooperation, which are critical for the continued development of their communities.

The President also highlighted the strategic importance of traditional rulers in fostering local governance and national integration, stressing that their influence can be harnessed to strengthen democratic values and grassroots participation.

Oba Haastrup, who is known for his distinguished career in administration and business, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and vision to the throne.

He previously served in several key positions in both the private and public sectors, earning a reputation for excellence, discipline, and dedication.

Many observers have expressed optimism that his reign will usher in a new era of progress and innovation for Ijesaland, especially in the areas of education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.

The coronation has sparked widespread celebrations across the region, with community members, cultural groups, and leaders of thought turning out in large numbers to witness the historic event.

For many, the occasion was not only a time of festivity but also a reaffirmation of their cultural identity and pride in their heritage.

Traditional dances, masquerade displays, and music performances lit up the streets of Ilesa, capturing the vibrant spirit of the Ijesa people.

As Oba Haastrup begins his reign, he faces the dual task of preserving ancient traditions while guiding his people through the modern challenges of development and inclusion.

The support from President Tinubu and other national leaders is seen as a boost to his mandate and a sign of confidence in the traditional institution’s relevance in today’s Nigeria.

The new Owa Obokun’s ascension marks a hopeful new chapter for Ijesaland, one that blends the wisdom of the past with the promise of the future.
