Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Olakulehin, Passes Away at 90

Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Olakulehin, Passes Away at 90…The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has died at the age of 90. He passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, exactly one year after ascending the throne.

Oba Olakulehin’s demise comes barely two days after he celebrated his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025.

Oba Olakulehin was born on July 5, 1935, and had a distinguished military career, retiring as a Major in 1979.

He also ventured into politics, serving as a member of the House of Representatives in 1992.

Before becoming the Olubadan, he held various positions in the Ibadan chieftaincy system, including Mogaji for the Ige Olakulehin Family and Balogun Olubadan.

The late monarch received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024, as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

During his reign, Oba Olakulehin promoted peace, cultural identity, and unity in Ibadanland.

He also played a stabilizing role in local politics, consistently urging collaboration between the state government and traditional rulers.

Governor Seyi Makinde has released a statement mourning Oba Olakulehin’s passing, assuring the family of the state’s support during this difficult time. “I commiserate with the family and all of us.

The government will definitely stay with the family and play whatever roles we are supposed to play, including giving Kabiyesi a befitting burial,” Makinde said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, also expressed sorrow over Oba Olakulehin’s death, describing him as a “remarkable leader and good-hearted giant in thought and action.”

The Sultan noted that despite his brief reign, Oba Olakulehin left an indelible mark on Ibadan and Nigeria at large.

As the city mourns its departed monarch, attention is expected to turn to the next in line to ascend the Olubadan throne, in accordance with the traditional succession system.

Rashidi Ladoja, the former Governor of Oyo State, is reportedly next in line to become the Olubadan. Ladoja had stated in August 2024 that he would become the Olubadan, citing his seniority in the Olubadan chieftaincy system.

Oba Olakulehin’s death has plunged Ibadanland into mourning, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, traditional rulers, and residents of Oyo State and beyond. His legacy as a unifying figure and a promoter of peace and cultural identity will be remembered for generations to come.

The burial arrangements for Oba Olakulehin are yet to be announced by the Olubadan-in-Council. As the people of Ibadanland bid farewell to their beloved monarch, they also look forward to the ascension of a new Olubadan who will continue his legacy of promoting peace, unity, and cultural heritage.
