Kidnapping Epidemic Grips Delta Communities – Urgent Call for Special Intervention

Gunmen said to be enforcing the already abolished sit-at-home order on Monday, attacked About three communities in Anambra State.

The order was previously declared by the outlawed secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

No fewer than five persons were reported shot dead in the attacks which happened in Abatete, Abagana and Ukpo communities.

Vehicles were not speared in the attack as some were set ablaze by the attackers who repeatedly warned people to always obey the sit-at-home order.

Casualties of the attacks which happened between 8am and 10am were mainly men of the Anambra Vigilante Group, AVG.

While the first attack was said to have happened in Abatete town, targeting vigilant personnel attached to the town’s President-General, three security men were later shot and killed and the president general of the community was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.

In another incident, the gunmen attacked Abagana and Ukpo communities. one vigilante group member and a motorcycle rider were killed at the Ukpo roundabout, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state,

The attacks sent members of communities around Anambra Central into panic.

A voice note circulating on social media had warned people in Awka not to venture outside, considering the proximity of the attacked communities to Awka, the state capital.

A member of Abatete community stated that: “We are praying for the recovery of our President General, this senseless violence has left our community shaken.”

When contacted about the killings, the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said: “The details are still sketchy, but our operatives are currently at the scene. I will get back to you.
