Kidnapping Epidemic Grips Delta Communities: Urgent Call for Special Intervention

Residents of villages nestled within Ika North East and Ika South Local Government Areas of Delta State are grappling with a surge in kidnappings, rendering them unable to tend to their farms due to pervasive fear.

In a statement issued by Mr. Clement Osuya, acting on behalf of the communities and representing the International Law Association, Nigeria Branch, the dire situation was underscored. According to Osuya, “The inhabitants of Boji Boji Owa and Agbor, alongside neighboring villages, are confronting an alarming humanitarian crisis.”

The communities implore the Delta state government and law enforcement agencies to intervene promptly, as kidnappers not only seize individuals but also resort to fatal measures against families unable to meet ransom demands.

“These communities are besieged by kidnappers, instilling terror through home invasions, abductions, and violent acts,” the statement lamented.

The pervasive insecurity has instilled deep-seated fear among locals, compelling them to abandon agricultural activities and curtail their movements. Consequently, the region faces a sharp decline in productivity, exacerbating food scarcity and looming humanitarian distress.

The plea underscores the imperative for the Delta State government to fulfill its obligation to safeguard citizens in the affected local government areas. Urgent and decisive action is deemed necessary to ensure the safety and security of residents.

A call is made to the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters to swiftly deploy a specialized intervention unit to the affected areas. The deployment of this highly skilled squad is seen as pivotal in stemming violent crime and restoring tranquility to the region.

Confidence is expressed in the capability of the Nigerian Police Force to address the crisis effectively, with an expectation of a prompt and robust response.

The statement further demands immediate intervention from the Nigerian Army Headquarters to quash the scourge of kidnapping and violence plaguing Ika North East and Ika South local government areas.

It is asserted that the deployment of the military is essential to safeguard lives and livelihoods, particularly amidst the escalating humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the inability to farm.

The welfare of the people of Ika land, integral to Delta State and Nigeria’s progress, is emphasized, with a resounding call for government and security agencies to take comprehensive and swift measures to restore peace and security.

The repercussions of inaction are starkly outlined, warning of a catastrophic collapse of agricultural production and livelihoods should urgent measures not be implemented.

The statement concludes with a fervent appeal to the Delta State government, the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters, and the Nigerian Army Headquarters to heed the distress calls of Ika land’s residents and respond with urgency and efficacy, placing the safety and well-being of citizens at the forefront.
